You know that girl next door that is always smiling and willing to lend a helping hand? Let me introduce you to her. Her name is Lindsay Martin and she happens to be my amazing roommate! I can hear your protests of my bias arising, but I am not biased I just get to see the proof from behind the scenes that she is the real deal. She is the girl that serves in the Junior High ministry at church. Who on her weekends off could be out living the adventurous life of a single 20s something, but is at the coffee shop writing bible studies and planning retreats for the ministry. She is the encourager who is always there to help her family and friends. She is the wonderful girl who is going on a short term mission trip next month.

So Lindsay, tell me about your trip:
I am going with a team from Rocky Mountain Calvary from March 7th-18th to Gulu, Uganda, East Africa.

Wow, Uganda! That is a pretty awesome country! (This is where my bias is applicable) Why Uganda?
I have always had a heart for Africa. It started when my family adopted my African American sister. It has shown me how God created us differently and I wanted to get to know the different cultures than what we have. In high school I went to Mexico three times, but this is my first trip overseas.

What will you be doing while you are there?
We will mostly be working with the women in the city of Gulu and surrounding villages. We will be holding bible studies and having fellowship time. On Sunday our team will be sending groups to various village churches to host vacation bible school.

Are you scared or worried about anything?
There are definitely areas that God is helping me to work through. I am not a fan of flying, the longest flight I have ever been on was for three hours. I am worried about being able to interact with the people. They have seen and experienced things I could never imagine. I will be learning more from them than them from me.

Anything Else? Worried about the hippos? You know they are the deadliest animal in Africa!
Haha, no. I do have a little fear about losing my passport. Oh and mosquitoes! I do not want to get malaria

What about the spiritual warfare?
I am actually kind of excited for that. It shows the enemy is scared for us, that we are a target. I wouldn’t say I am not afraid, just excited to see how God is going to move through it.

How have the preparations been going?
Pretty good, trying to stay on top of everything. I have one shot left, yellow fever. I have already had two shots so far. Also, our team trainings have started. I need to begin shopping for clothing and supplies. I am working on preparing my heart through prayer that God would continue to break my heart and build a further burden for the people. Also, that I would be flexible for the dynamics and logistics of the trip. I have been watching movies and reading up on history, people and culture.

What do you have left to do?
More prayer! Oh, and shopping, shots, packing, mosquito warfare items, additional trainings with team, getting ahead on things at work…. A lot of last minute things.

Do you have any specific prayer requests?
That I would trust in the Lord in many aspects of the trip – support money, travel (flying), health (current coniditions and worries about things when there), comfort for family while I am gone (especially parents), and unity for team.

Turning 30

What I have learned since turning 30:

Apprarently there is a bollywood movie about it, but not sure I would recommend it.
Gray hair starts growing faster and more abundantly the minute you turn 30. So not fun...
The fear of not being where you thought you would be can overtake your existence.
The realization that God is in control = freeing!
There is this weird state of being told you are old while others balk "you're still young".
You secretly relish "being old".
The importance of insurance, pension, investments, etc take on a new meaning.
Making pseudo bucket lists can be fun yet startling at the same time
I worry less what people think of me.
I worry more about my relationships with the people close to me.
God is the only way I can live, manage, cope, grow, and so much more!
Being in bed before 9pm is pretty wonderful.
Apparently green vegtables will not kill you and can be fun to cook with.
Donald Trump persuaded bankers to lend him $80 million when he was 30 so he could buy the Commodore Hotel - makes my student loans seem so reasonable.
I check off a different box when filling out forms [30-39]. Yipes!
People keep telling me your 30's are awesome - I guess we are suppose to learn from the mistakes of our 20's.
I cringe at the realization and long list of mistakes in my 20's.
I am not offended to be called "ma'am".
Moisturizing is a staple.
Mr. Batchelor was right in high school. I would use the math someday.
Being negative is a choice.
Coupons really do work.
Pizza at 2am isn't as fun anymore.
Laughing with friends at 2am still is!
You don't have to wait until you are married to own a KitchenAid mixer.
Everyone is not looking at me, they are worrying abou themselves.
The oldies and classic rock radio stations play songs from my childhood. And I’m okay with that.
I do not like store bought cakes.
I love mediterranean food, and mexican, and italian, and thai, and hawaiin - oh the delicous goodness.
I now have 10 years to work on my next list!

A Cousin's Challenge

It never ceases to amaze me how a simple act can throw one's heart into a dervish. Yet, I am learning the real affect comes from one's reaction. This happened to me today, as my heart went into a whirlwind and the rest of me spun away after it, I crashed. It landed me on my knees pouring my heart out to the Lord ... yet again. Through tears and prayers I felt hopeless and out of control. In times before this, two scenarios would commonly take place, RUN or WALLOW. Or on a rare occasion both. And chocolate would probably be involved. However, today the Lord pushed my heart to pursue. Pursue Him, pursue relationship, pursue accountability. Instead of holding in I reached out and it helped. Through His word and the words of friends I came out of the storm seeing His faithfulness. I tell you this not our of boasting of myself but as a testimony of His amazing love and faithfulness. The challenge He has given my heart is a the simple pursuit of Him. The bonus package is the gifts that come with it ... relationship, hope, love, and so much more.

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God that surpasses all understanding with guard your heart and mind through Christ Jesus" Philippians 4:6-7

Merry Christmas

It is Christmas eve in Colorado Springs, but there is no snow on the ground. This morning as I was wrapping the last two presents I was remembering my last Christmas in Michigan. Midnight on Christmas eve it started to snow and by Christmas morning there was at least a foot on the ground. It was beautiful, untouched by plows and cars in the silence of the crisp morning. While, that Christmas was a Bing Crosby dream come true, it was spent alone. Though I sat in a cozy house amidst a beautiful scene, it was a very difficult day.

What a contrast to today as I sit in this house surrounded by family and friends. While there is no snow on the ground, it doesn't matter. Christmas isn't about snow or decorations or presents. It is about the love of God. The love He bestowed upon us by sending His only Son. It is about His love that fills us and we share with others. So, as you gather with your family and friends this holiday weekend remember those in your life that might be alone or do not know God's love this Christmas. Share the glorious, eternal gift you have received.

I wish you and your family have a blessed and wonderful Christmas.

There has been a story from Uganda that I have wanted to share for some months. I could tell tales of bugs, snakes and spiders - oh my! But something really special occurred that I was reminded of today:

We had a day where we to spend some time reflecting on what we were where afraid of. As we ventured out to find places to be alone, I ended up at the edge of the compound, next to the fields, and below the trees. It was raining a bit and I thought the trees would add a bit of protection in addition to the umbrella I held as I sat and prayed. As I came before the Lord, asking Him to reveal to me what I was afraid of the drops continued to drip on my umbrella, then came the odd noise. It sounded like a branch breaking but as I looked up I saw nothing in the tree, maybe it was a small branch from an animal or something. I turned my focus back to praying, but something did not seem right. I repeatedly, kept looking back at the tree and saw nothing. Finally, I stood and moved to the side for a different perspective and then I saw it. Directly above where I had been sitting a rather large branch had snapped off from the trunk and was hanging by just a few fibers. If it had failed directly on me I would have been severely injured.

Stunned, I moved away from the tree and sat back down. I had been sitting there trying to focus on what I was scared of, completely lost in perspective. Yet, in the midst of that this branch starts to fall off and the reality is that God held it in place. I mean there was just a few strands of tree holding this thing together. Even after it happened it took me getting up out of "my spot" and changing my view to see what was going on. Then it hit me, the real problem in all of it was that I was not and had not been trusting God. Yet, here He was continuing to protect me. He had been there all of my life guiding and protecting, but I was so focused on "me" that I was not seeing it. My fear was based on past experiences of man, but God had never let me down. I was trying to hold him responsible for the sins of others. However, He was holding me safe.

I was reminded of this incident and revelation today as I sat and prayed, questioning God's will and plan in my life. Thankfully, He spoke peace into my heart and then later I was encouraged by the story of Mary. Here was a young woman who had dreams and desires of her own accord, yet the Lord came and gave her a calling. Her response is amazing, in that she willingly and easily submitted to His word. Her faith outweighed her fears. Could I be that strong? I know that I am not called to be the mother of Jesus, but I do know He has a plan for me. Now how I respond will be the test. How will the scales land, hopefully fear will fall to the peace and assurance of Christ!

I am officially HIRED!

It is still a bit surreal to think of but I will be starting a new job at the end of the month (Aug. 30th) as an accounting assistant.

I am heading back to California next week (Thursday th 19th) to finish packing, settling things, and saying "see you soon"s to everyone.

Thank you for all of your prayers and support! They have been grealty appreciated. I am excited to walk in this new experience with the Lord.

"Reverse" Culture Shock

Stage one: Disengagement may happen before you leave your host country and often times occurs because of the pace of work, goodbye dinners. As a result, you begin to distance yourself from friends and host country nationals.
Stage two: Initial Euphoria may also occur as a result of leaving your host country and returning to the US. This is where you may have formed idealistic views of home, and what will happen upon your return. You are happy to be home! This feeling of euphoria may last a few weeks, but may inevitably give way to feelings of loneliness.
This is Stage three: Irritability and Hostility, which is the realization that life at home went on without you, and as you were learning new things and making subtle changes, they were too. You may feel that friends and family don’t understand or want to hear what you experienced abroad.
Patience and continued reflection will lead to Stage four: Readjustment & Adaptation. You may see the world through a different lens now, but are quick to find that the cultural differences you once thought so great are, in reality, infinitesimal. You have learned to incorporate the changes you’ve made within yourself, into new goals and ideas that don’t negate your own culture’s norms and values. You have attained a balance between both cultures.

I cannot believe graduation is so close - just five weeks away!! AHHHHHH!!! I am feeling a mixture of excitement and nervourness. It will be so sad and wonderful to mark the end of this time in the Institute, but also somewhat nerve wracking as I ponder...."what next". To be honest, my future in unclear. There is a lot of praying and talking going on and we will just have to wait and see what happens. But that being said there is one clear plan in action - after graduation I will be heading to Kenya to visit the Fergusons!! YAY!!!

Then.... back to the States - yes I will be back in Orange County around the middle of June. I look forward to seeing and visiting with everyone. And I must admit the idea of a hot shower and power sounds so luxorious :D

But in all that I would like to ask for prayer. Pray that the Lord would reveal His plan. That it would be clear. That He would confirm or close this path.

Prayer Requests:

POWER!!!! We are really struggling in this area - the last outage was for over a week. It is inconvenient because of keeping food and computers and phones, but most importantly we cannot run our well. When power is out we have to go to boar holes to fetch water. It is not the end of the world, but is hard with so many people fetching water and intermitent rain.
Physical protection - I have been battling inestinal parasites and have had a few falls. Also, we are going to be traveling a bit this week.
Children - our kids just finished exams and will have their last week of classes this week. They will be on holiday for a few weeks. Pray that they use their free time wisely.

Will be visiting other ministries in Uganda this week (Bethany Village, Watoto, Compassion, etc.)

We finished letter writing with our primary students last week and will be working on Seconday students this week.

Hi everyone! I miss you all. I am struggling with keeping in touch and I am sorry for that. Power and internet access are a bit of an obstacle, but I must admit that I have not been making it a priority. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers daily!!! Thank you for your prayers and messages they mean the world to me.

I thought I should share I am having a bit of a hard time these days. It is hard to think that as I am surrounding by beauty and joy everyday, but things have just started to dig deeper into my own sins, relationship with the Lord, others, and future. I know that God is in control and trust in what He has planned and is doing.

Last weekend we had a break from institute and headed off for a few days in Jinja. It is a town situated on Lake Victoria and the source of the Nile River. It was fun and very beautiful.

There are many spots labeled "the source" of the Nile, but this one seemed the most convincing. Although the picture does not seem very spectacular. Our guide took us out to a very ( I emphasize "very") small island and showed us this spot where the water was turning. He said that there had once been a big waterfall that water from Lake Victoria spilled over into the start of the Nile. This is actually the spot that William Speke claimed as the source.

I thought I would share about Saturdays here. While in the States I would live for sleeping in and no schedule, Saturdays here are the hardest and busiests days of the week.

Typical Saturday:
8 am: Wake Up - Breakfast - Get Ready
9 - 11 am: Wash Clothes (by hand)
11 - 12:30: Other cleaning (pit latrine, sweeping, fetching water, etc)
1 pm - lunch
1:30pm - off to the village market (half hour walk to get there)
4pm - visit family group (play, garden, homework, etc)
6 pm - Dinner
7pm - Family Group OR Visiting with Friends

The funny thing is Saturday that I still look foward to Saturdays even with the extra work.

Greetings everyone!

Things are going well. The kids are back in school for the new term, it rained last night (Praise God - this is a wonderful treat in the middle of dry season) and I was finally able to get strong internet access today! :D

We are battling a bit of problems with power and water - so prayer would be greatly appreciated there.

I have made a movie of things here - but after waiting 40 minutes for it to load I accidently deleted it :( Since I am running out of power I will have to try again hopefully tomorrow.

Sorry for the lack of posts! We have been having a bit of trouble with power and to get a good connection to the internet I have to venture out into mosquito territory. However, I am trying to get up early to work on things :D

What is new:
This week is "Envisioning Week" at New Hope. Every January the staff comes together to regroup for the new year ahead and reflect on why we are here. It has been an awesome time so far with some great speakers and incredible worship.

Fun Story:
I killed a giant cockroach last night! I was heading to the bathroom and when I opened the door there he was....but not for long. I think my fright fueled the killing blow to him.

Home Sweet Banda

Well I have been here for a week and it has been quite busy. I met my roommate, Kierstin, in London as we headed on to Uganda. We arrived at New Hope last Sunday and started settling into our new place. It has been a bit of work, but it fun to see the progress. Class started last week, we are 21 students in total ( 9 westerners & 12 Ugandans). I have developed a cold and have been struggling the last few days but hopefully will get better soon.

Prayer Cards

I was helping a friend finish moving yestarday and as I packed up some things I discovered two prayer cards. Each card had a student's name from New Hope's P7 class. Before I left in August I had offered the cards to friends so they could pray for the students as we worked and traveled with them. The interesting part of yestarday's discovery were the names on the cards. Their faces flashed to my mind as I held the cards and stared at my friend. She had been praying for these girls completely unaware of anything in their lives beyond their names. I could not help smiling at God's handiwork as I shared the connection between them.

Each girl is a beautiful child of God that has been hurt. Yet, they have responded to that pain in different ways. While one is shy and insecure of almost every aspect around her, the other is bold and misguided in her strive for love and attention. In a strikingly familiar scenario I witnessed her alienate and mock the shy one. I was struck by the hurt and pain unfolding before me, but also by the situation itself. It reminded me of my own childhood and that of the girls I have worked with in youth group over the years. Even on a different continent, in a different culture kids go through the same troubles.

I love that God put those two names together for Jen to pray for. I am glad I could share a bit of insight for direction for her to pray for them. I am grateful for the Lord's call as I head back to Uganda and see these girls again.

This just in - Helen is going back to Uganda!

That's right I received notice this morning and am headed back to Uganda, East Africa THIS January. In 81 days I will be boarding a plane (again) for a LONG (38 hours) journey to New Hope (www.newhopeuganda.org). I will be at New Hope for five months serving and attending their Institute of Childcare and Family. The plan after that is still in the works, we shall see how the Lord guides.

The next two months are going to be a whirlwind of planning and preparing, your prayers would be GREATLY appreciated.

Prayer Request

Hi Everyone,

I thank you all for your prayers and support as I am traveling the path the Lord is setting before me. Uganda was such a wonderful, amazing, eye opening, heart healing time.
Part of my trip was to explore and see if and how the Lord may be calling me to full time missions in Uganda and boy did I receive confirmation.

The next step for me is going back to Uganda, to New Hope's Institute of Childcare and Family. It is a five month program that trains and sends over 20 committed servants of the Lord each year into the “harvest field” to work with orphaned and destitute children across the world.

The Urgent Prayer Request is this: I have been offered a possible opening to come THIS January! Yes - all I can say is WOW. As I fervently pray for this can you help me too? There are a lot of factors to be considered but I trust in God's plan for me. I have to give an answer as soon as possible and will keep you guys posted as well.

God has called our family to serve in Nairobi, Kenya alongside a church known as Living Water Christian Fellowship pastored by Robbie Gorden. Jonathan will be assisting at the church and teaching at the Bible College, also headed by Pastor Robbie Gorden. After a three year commitment to the church & Bible College we are praying about planting another church where God leads.

Riots in Uganda

At least two people have been killed in Uganda's capital, Kampala, in clashes between police and rioting supporters of a traditional king.

Police fired tear gas at the protesters who hurled stones and burned tyres. One report said at least seven people died. The demonstrators protested against the government's attempts to stop the king of Buganda from visiting a region near Kampala where violence was feared.

The king has a big influence among the Baganda, Uganda's largest ethnic group.
At least two people were killed in Thursday's riots in central Kampala, police and witnesses said.
But a photographer working for the Associated Press news agency said he had counted seven bodies, adding that all the victims appeared to be civilians.

The protesters fought police from behind burning barricades
King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II - who is constitutionally barred from taking part in national politics - had wanted to visit a hostile part of his community to the north-east of Kampala.
The issue is so sensitive that ethnic Baganda members of parliament walked out of the legislature on Wednesday.

There has also been a long history of tension between the king and central government, particularly over land reform proposals that the Baganda say threaten their community, the BBC's Peter Greste reports.

Buganda is one of four ancient kingdoms in Uganda. It was abolished in 1966 but then restored in the 1990s.

Things are going well here in Uganda, however there are a few things that could you help with by praying for.

I came to Kampala on Monday to stay with friends for a few days, however I devoloped a strange rash/bumps on Tuesday. Also, my friend Jill who I am staying with has been fighting stomach problems.

We are both working on getting better,

but your prayers would be greatly appreciated.

Funny Moment

Yestarday I was able to visit with friends and had one of the funniest moments since being here. I ended up standing in the middle of a pig pen, in the mud, while it was raining, chasing after a sow and her piglets trying to clean her and give her medicine. Do not worry, they are many pictures that I will hopefully post soon!

I am on my way to Uganda, I cannot believe the time has finally come. I just wanted to take a moment and thank each and every one of you for everything over the past few months. Your prayers and support have meant so much. I am excited for all that I will be doing, seeing, and hearing from the Lord. I will try and keep in touch as much as possible, stay tuned for updates.

Things have been busy lately, but very exicting:

1) So very close to being completely funded. Just a mere 9% ($348) left to go

2) Dates are set and tickets are bought. I received my flight schedule last week, it is so exhilirating and scary at the same time.

- The children and staff of New Hope I will be working with

- Logistics and preparations of the trip

- a construction worker to be able to join the Downey team

- the Downey team ( it is down to two other girls and myself)

Praise Reports:

It did not rain, so...........

The Garage Sale was awesome! We raised $810! Thank you to all who helped and donated AND Prayed!!
The Ferguson Four (who are leaving for full time missions in Kenya) also had a fundraiser this weekend and raised more funds needed for their move! God is so good.

I am very, very close to being fully funded for the trip!! Only $693 left to go.

Prayer Requests:

My brother in-law passed away on Friday morning quite suddenly. Please pray for my sister, nephew, and all of the family.
Four year old Daniel, a boy at New Hope Uganda, is in the hospital with cerebral malaria

Two weeks ago I had the privilege of meeting Barry Kashambo, Patsy Balinda, and Captain Daniel Musinguzi of Uganda. Though they were here on business, the Lord blessed me with their fellowship and friendship throughout the week. I look forward to keeping in touch with them and seeing them again this summer in Uganda!

Question #1: Africa? Really?
Yep! Can you believe it? I know I have certaintly questioned the Lord a time or two throughout this process. Africa? Really? Just like Moses I have put my fears and inadequacies before the Lord but He has answered back "GO".

Question #2: When did you know you wanted to go?
Well, when I wanted to go and when I knew I was going were two different dates. I have been praying about missions for a couple of years, but I knew I was going to Africa when the Lord spoke to me at a special service back in October. However, I had some anxiety about being called and it was not until recently that I was ready to answer the call.

Question #3: When do you think you will go?
Summer 2009. There are a couple possibilities, so I am praying and seeking the Lord's guidance on when to go. *Prayer Point*

Question #4: What did your family say when you told them?
Awesome! We want to go too! I have a very supportive and wonderful family.

Question #5: Are you afraid of bugs?
I am not afraid of bugs, as long as they are not on me! Now snakes and spiders are another story!! But I have been assured that I will probably not see any snakes, but knowing my luck I am going to see lots of them.

Question #6: What will you be doing there?
Seeing if and where the Lord wants me to serve!! I hope to visit New Hope Uganda, Calvary Chapel Kampala, friends in Kampala and Entebbe, and friends/ministries in Nairobi, Kenya.

Question #7: How long will you stay?
For this first trip, one month. Most of the time I will be in Uganda, but also in Nairobi, Kenya to visit friends and ministries there. I feel the Lord calling me to full time ministry so I am excited to see where God guides me.

Question #8: Do they have a Bank of the West there?

No, but I think this is a grand opportunity for branch expansion!

Question #9: Where's the nearest Target?
Unfortunaly there are no Target stores in Uganda and sadly I read that Target is not pursuing expanding internationally. However, I do believe the closest geographic location would be Miami, Florida.

Question #10: Can I come with you?
Sure! Check with my travel agent. His name is Jesus and he can be reached anywhere, anytime!

Question #11: Will you have to celebrate Kwanza?
I do not think so... I think it is more of an American tradition.
